Parla Conceicao alla vigilia del Derby con l’Inter, valevole per la semifinale di andata di Coppa Italia, le sue parole in conferenza:

È un derby d'andata, quanto può incidere sul risultato complessivo della qualificazione? Come lo vive?
"Sono state partite importanti per noi perché ha deciso un titolo. Il derby è sempre una partita importante, per il contesto, per tutti. I momenti sono diversi. Qualche giocatore anche diverso in campo e vediamo di fare una buona partita. L'Inter è una squadra fortissima, dal lavoro solido, ma noi vogliamo entrare forte in partita e raggiungere quello che vogliamo, che è vincere".

Come stanno Leao e Thiaw. Può una notte del genere esaltare Leao?
"Il gruppo sta bene. Anche Ruben è stato operato, sta bene. Tornerà oggi. Sono tutti disponibili. Abbiamo ancora domani per lavorare, oggi abbiamo fatto lavoro differenziato per chi ha giocato di più a Napoli. Domani lo faremo ancora, senza alcuna intensità. Tutti sono disponibili. perciò spetta a me scegliere. Certo dopo la partita sono più bravo a capire cosa dovevo o non dovevo fare. Domani presentiamo un undici titolare forte e penso che i giocatori che sono in panchina che hanno già dato una risposta fantastica".

Questo derby è un'ultima spiaggia per l'Europa?
"Abbiamo questa coscienza che abbiamo una partita da fare, e non a tutte queste situazione, Dobbiamo entrare forti in partita e vincere. È chiaro che è la strada più corta per arrivare in Europa. In campionato mancano però ancora partite da fare e vincere".

Hai parlato in questi giorni con Santiago Gimenez?
"Un periodo di ambientamento è assolutamente normale. Gimenez arriva, fa 4,5 gol, poi ha un calo. Ma succede a tutti i giocatori perché quelli italiano è uno dei campionati migliore al mondo. L'aiuto più grande che gli posso fare, è che quando sono arrivato in Italia mi hanno dato della pippa, poi ho fatto gol in finale di Supercoppa contro la Juventus e mi hanno dato della 'pippina'. Alle volte è meglio lasciarlo nel suo spazio e guadagnare quella fiducia che lui ha".

È più paradossale i 20 punti di distacco dall'Inter o il fatto che l'Inter non abbia mai vinto contro il Milan in stagione?
"Sono tutte partite diverse. Il campionato è andato come voi conoscete. L'Inter sta facendo bene, anche il Milan ha vinto il campionato pochi anni fa. Penso che una cosa è che il derby, queste grande sfide, sono sempre diverse. È un anno che a livello di campionato, è vero che il Milan non è abituato a questa classifica. La cosa più importante è focalizzarsi sulla partita di domani".

Su Joao Felix
"La stessa cosa che ho detto di Santi. Non è facile. Ma è normale questa cosa tra i giocatori, a me piacciono quelli che parlano perché la comunicazione è molto importante. La personalità, la comunicazione".

Quanto la possibile vittoria della Coppa Italia ti renderebbe soddisfatto del percorso al Milan?
"Non lo so. Soddisfatto sicuramente perché vincerei un altro trofeo. Ma prima dobbiamo vincere le semifinali, poi la finale. Non mi piace vivere questo, mi piace vivere con intensità giorno dopo giorno e provare a migliorare la squadra a livello professionale, correggere alcuni difetti che ho da allenatore. Il mio pensiero ogni giorno è di lavorare al massimo e migliorare squadra e me stesso. Adesso pensare tra due mesi, un mese e mezzo, come mi sentirò, non lo so. Adesso non sono la fiducia più felice del mondo per quello che ho vissuto in questi tre mesi. La squadra col rapporto è benissimo, e si è visto anche a Napoli nel secondo tempo. Bisogna migliorare certe cose che avete detto, ma comunque non è facile per nessuno. Anche perché mi chiamo Sergio, non Sergini".

Come mai non è ancora riuscito a dare equilibrio a questo Milan?
"L'Equilibrio è di tutta la squadra, non solo della linea difensiva. Io sono un allenatore a cui piace avere la squadra compatta. Ma avere la squadra corta quando avanti non siamo "pesanti" a pressare, non abbiamo un comportamento collettivo con quello che pensiamo, è più difficile e siamo più vulnerabili".

Lei è un allenatore da Campionato o da Coppe?
"Gli allenatori o vincono o non vincono. Certo, c'è anche il peso del titolo, ma non esistono queste distinzioni, sicuramente".

Cosa non ha visto in Rafa in questi mesi?
"Non è che io ho conosciuto Rafa in Supercoppa. Io conosco tanti giocatori, non è che lo conosco solo per la Supercoppa, perché lo conoscevo già dal Portogallo. Dopo c'è tutta un'evoluzione che lui deve avere. Se lui gioca è intermittente, se dopo lui entra e fa la differenza doveva giocare dall'inizio. Anche io sono perplesso a gente che di calcio parla come parla. Lo devo dire. Rafa continuo con la stessa opinione: a livello di qualità è uno dei migliori al mondo. Dopo bisogna metterlo fuori ed avere la consistenza per arrivare a fine stagione con 25 gol e tanti assist. Se trova questa continuità sarà uno dei migliori al mondo. Deve trovare questa continuità. Non mi chiedete perché non gioca o non gioca. Sono scelte che noi facciamo perché noi vediamo qua tutti i giorni, ed è così, e noi sappiamo delle cose, gestione fisica, come è arrivato, come non è arrivato. Sono io a decidere, mi pagano per questo".

Sui momenti meno felici al Milan
"Non c'entro niente con queste guerre. Io parlo di allenatore. Io sono focalizzato a vincere titoli. Ne ho vinti alcuni, 13, allora è quello. Io sono in questa situazione, al nono posto, quando in Portogallo con squadre che lottavo per non retrocedere ero più sopra. Io sono un allenatore che ogni partita lotta per vincere ed arrivare a traguardi importanti, non per il nono posto".

Questa partita in una stagione così deludente, può segnare la differenza?
"Noi possiamo vedere il bicchiere mezzo pieno e vuoto. Se dobbiamo parlare vedete da quanti anni il Milan non vince da quanti anni due titoli. Certo, a livello di classifica è critica, in questo momento non è da Milan. La partita di domani è importante perché ci permette di avvicinarci ad una finale, ad un titolo".

It’s the first leg of the derby. How much can it affect the overall qualification result? How are you experiencing it?

They were important matches for us because they decided a title. The derby is always important—for the context, for everyone. The moments are different now. Some players are different on the field, and we’ll try to play well. Inter is a very strong team, with solid work behind them, but we want to start the game strong and achieve what we want, which is to win.

How are Leao and Thiaw doing? Can a night like this inspire Leao?

The group is doing well. Even Ruben, who had surgery, is fine. He’ll be back today. Everyone is available. We still have tomorrow to work. Today we did lighter training for those who played more in Naples. Tomorrow we’ll do it again, without much intensity. Everyone’s available, so it’s up to me to choose. Of course, after the game, it’s easier to know what I should or shouldn’t have done. Tomorrow we’ll present a strong starting eleven, and I think the players on the bench have already given a fantastic response.

Is this derby a last chance for Europe?

We’re aware that we have a game to play, not thinking about all these situations. We need to start strong and win. Obviously, it’s the shortest path to Europe. But there are still games to play and win in the league.

Have you spoken to Santiago Gimenez lately?

An adjustment period is completely normal. Gimenez arrived, scored 4 or 5 goals, then had a drop—happens to every player because Serie A is one of the best leagues in the world. The biggest help I can give is to let him find his own confidence. When I arrived in Italy, they called me a flop. Then I scored in the Supercoppa final against Juventus, and they called me a ‘little flop.’ Sometimes it’s better to let him find his own space and regain confidence.

Is it more surprising to be 20 points behind Inter or that Inter hasn’t beaten Milan this season?

Every match is different. The league went as you know. Inter is doing well, and Milan won the league a few years ago. The derby and big matches are always unique. It’s been a year where Milan isn’t used to being in this position. The most important thing is to focus on tomorrow’s game.

On Joao Felix:

Same as with Santi. It’s not easy. But it’s normal for players to go through this. I like those who speak up because communication and personality are important.

How much would winning the Coppa Italia satisfy you regarding your journey with Milan?

I don’t know. I’d definitely be satisfied because it would mean another trophy. But first, we have to win the semifinals and then the final. I prefer to live intensely day by day, improve the team professionally, and fix some of my own coaching flaws. My focus is to work hard and improve both the team and myself. Thinking about how I’ll feel in a month or two doesn’t make sense now. I’m not the happiest person right now because of what I’ve gone through in these three months. The relationship with the team is good, as seen in the second half against Napoli. We need to improve on some things, but it’s not easy for anyone. After all, my name is Sergio, not ‘Sergini’.

Why haven’t you managed to give this Milan balance yet?

Balance involves the whole team, not just the defensive line. I like having a compact team. But when we’re not pressing well up front or don’t have collective behavior aligned with our ideas, it becomes harder and we’re more vulnerable.

Are you a coach better suited for league matches or cup competitions?

Coaches either win or don’t. Of course, titles matter, but there’s no real distinction between the two.

What haven’t you seen in Rafa in recent months?

It’s not like I only got to know Rafa during the Supercoppa. I knew him from Portugal. He needs to keep evolving. If he plays inconsistently or comes off the bench to make an impact, it’s easy to say he should’ve started. I’m puzzled when people talk about football like that. I still believe Rafa has the quality to be one of the best in the world. But he needs consistency—getting to the end of the season with 25 goals and many assists. If he finds that consistency, he’ll be among the best. Don’t ask why he plays or doesn’t. These are choices we make because we see things daily—physical condition, how he arrived, how he didn’t. I’m the one deciding—that’s what I’m paid for.

On the less happy moments at Milan:

I’m not involved in these conflicts. I’m focused on winning titles. I’ve won a few—13—so that’s what matters. I’m in this situation, ninth place, while in Portugal, with teams fighting against relegation, I was higher up. I’m a coach who fights to win every game and reach important goals, not to be in ninth place.

Can this game make a difference in such a disappointing season?

You can see the glass as half full or half empty. Look at how many years it’s been since Milan won two titles. Sure, the league position is critical and not fitting for Milan. But tomorrow’s game is crucial because it could bring us closer to a final and a trophy.
