Quanto è contento del carattere mostrato dalla squadra, al di là delle individualità?

“Ritengo che anche oggi abbiamo dimostrato di essere un gruppo compatto e determinato, dove chi è entrato a gara in corso ha dato un contributo prezioso. Abbiamo apportato modifiche tattiche, spostando João insieme a Santi in avanti e allargando l’attacco. Non è merito dell’allenatore, ma delle qualità dei giocatori”.

Cosa ha detto ai giocatori nel cerchio finale? Si punta ora a vincere la Coppa Italia?

“No. Ho detto semplicemente che chi oggi non ha giocato deve comunque allenarsi, perché domani è giorno di riposo. Va bene? È proprio così. Non sono un bugiardo, preferisco tacere piuttosto che raccontare bugie”.

Avrebbe voluto proporre prima questo modulo?

“Abbiamo iniziato in un certo modo e concluso in un altro. Il mio lavoro è leggere la partita e trovare soluzioni. A volte noi allenatori riusciamo a dare qualcosa in più, altre volte no. Il merito va ai ragazzi che sono entrati e hanno creduto in ciò che facciamo in settimana. Non lavoriamo solo sul sistema, ma anche su aspetti individuali, di reparto e di squadra. Certo, ci sono errori, come sul gol subito. Durante la settimana, quando abbiamo più tempo, cerchiamo di dare ai giocatori ulteriori opzioni. Ecco perché a Milanello siamo sempre concentrati su questi dettagli. Quando le cose funzionano e vinciamo, siamo felici”.

Le condizioni di Fofana?

“Ha avuto un fastidio al piede, anche in settimana ha stretto i denti per allenarsi. Oggi ha sentito un riacutizzarsi del problema. Nulla di grave, credo. Dobbiamo gestirlo bene, perché tutti i giocatori sono fondamentali”.

Coach Sergio Conceição spoke to DAZN after the Genoa-Milan match, which ended 1-2. Here’s what the Portuguese manager shared:

How satisfied are you with the team’s character, beyond individual talent?

“I believe today we once again showed we are a united and determined group, where those who came off the bench made a valuable contribution. We made tactical adjustments, moving João alongside Santi up front and widening the attack. It’s not the coach’s merit, but the players’ quality”.

What did you tell the players in the post-match huddle? Are you now aiming to win the Coppa Italia?

“No. I simply told them that those who didn’t play today still need to train because tomorrow is a rest day. Okay? That’s exactly it. I’m not a liar — I prefer to say nothing rather than tell lies”.

Did you want to implement this system earlier?

“We started in one way and finished in another. My job is to read the game and find solutions. Sometimes we coaches manage to give something extra; other times we don’t. The credit goes to the players who came on and believed in the work we do during the week. We don’t just focus on the system; we work on individual aspects, by unit, and as a team. Of course, mistakes happen, like on the goal we conceded. During the week, when we have more time, we try to offer players more options. That’s why at Milanello, we stay fully focused on these details. When things work and we win, we’re happy”.

How is Fofana doing?

“He had a foot issue; even during the week, he pushed himself to train. Today, the problem flared up again. I think it’s nothing serious. We need to manage him carefully because all the players are important”.
