Il ruolo di direttore sportivo del Milan ha un nuovo candidato: Lee Congerton. Secondo La Gazzetta dello Sport, il gallese sarebbe addirittura in pole position grazie al suo profilo internazionale e all’esperienza che il club rossonero sta cercando per questo incarico.

Nel corso della sua carriera, però, l’attuale direttore sportivo dell’Al-Ahli non ha sempre ricoperto questo ruolo. Dal 2002 al 2005 è stato prima coordinatore del vivaio del Wrexham, poi vice allenatore di Rafa Benitez al Liverpool, partecipando a 60 partite (a cui si aggiungono le 112 sotto la guida di Gérard Houllier).

Successivamente si è trasferito al Chelsea, dove ha ricoperto il ruolo di responsabile scouting dal 2005 al 2011.

Poi l’esperienza in Germania, all’Amburgo, come direttore tecnico tra il 2011 e il 2014. In quel periodo ha sponsorizzato l’acquisto di un giovane Hakan Calhanoglu, preso da una squadra di Serie C tedesca.

La sua prima vera esperienza da direttore sportivo è arrivata al Sunderland nella stagione 2014/15. Tuttavia, non ha ottenuto i risultati sperati e ha contribuito alla retrocessione dei Black Cats in Championship.

Dopo quella delusione, tra il 2017 e il 2022 ha lavorato come responsabile scouting prima al Celtic, poi al Leicester.

Dal 2022 al 2024 ha ricoperto il doppio ruolo di direttore e capo scout all’Atalanta, contribuendo all’acquisto di giocatori come Rasmus Højlund, Ademola Lookman ed Ederson.

The role of sporting director at AC Milan has a new candidate: Lee Congerton. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Welshman is even considered to be in pole position thanks to his international profile and the experience the Rossoneri are looking for in this position.

Throughout his career, however, the current sporting director of Al-Ahli hasn’t always held this role. From 2002 to 2005, he was first the youth academy coordinator at Wrexham, then assistant coach to Rafa Benitez at Liverpool, taking part in 60 matches (in addition to 112 under Gérard Houllier).

He then moved to Chelsea, where he served as head of scouting from 2005 to 2011.

After that, he had a spell in Germany with Hamburg as technical director between 2011 and 2014. During this time, he backed the signing of a young Hakan Calhanoglu, who was then playing for a German third-division team.

His first real experience as sporting director came at Sunderland in the 2014/15 season. However, the results fell short, and he contributed to the Black Cats’ relegation to the Championship.

After that disappointment, between 2017 and 2022, he worked as head of scouting first at Celtic, then at Leicester.

From 2022 to 2024, he held a dual role as director and head scout at Atalanta, where he played a key part in signing players such as Rasmus Højlund, Ademola Lookman, and Ederson.
