Ecco le prime parole di Emerson Royal, alla sua conferenza di presentazione:

Hai sempre creduto nel Milan?

"Sì, ho avuto molte conversazioni con il club e i suoi rappresentanti. È sempre stato evidente che il Milan fosse la scelta migliore per me: lo porto nel cuore. Posso essere sia attaccante che difensore, ho grande determinazione. Il Milan ha sempre riposto fiducia in me. Anche se sono giovane, ho sempre ricoperto un ruolo da leader in tutte le squadre in cui sono stato: fa parte del mio carattere. Parlo molto con i miei compagni anche durante gli allenamenti. Vorrei ringraziare Zlatan e il Milan per questa opportunità e per l'impegno che hanno messo nel portarmi qui. Voglio dare il massimo."

Ti ispiri a qualche difensore della storia del Milan? Hai avuto modo di parlare con Fonseca?

"Ancora non ho parlato direttamente con l'allenatore. Il Milan ha avuto grandi giocatori come Thiago Silva e Cafu... Penso che tutti i brasiliani che sono passati di qui hanno lasciato un segno importante nella storia del club. Il Milan ha acquisito un Emerson che è in una fase di grande maturità: il tempo trascorso nelle mie ex squadre mi ha insegnato molto. Arrivo qui con grande motivazione. Potete contare su un guerriero."

Qual è il tuo rapporto con Ibra?

"Zlatan è un giocatore che fa la differenza a livello mondiale, tutti lo sanno. Lo seguivo in TV e ha avuto una carriera incredibile: ha sempre dimostrato una grande voglia di vincere. È stato un grande onore sapere che qualcuno come Ibra stava tenendo d'occhio me. Voglio ripagare questo impegno e lo farò sul campo."

Hai un'idea di come potrebbe utilizzarti Fonseca dal punto di vista tattico? Hai parlato con altri brasiliani del Milan?

"Penso che l'allenatore conosca bene le mie caratteristiche: ho dimostrato di essere capace di attaccare e difendere con grande intensità, proprio come piace a lui. Sono qui per giocare a calcio. Sì, ho parlato del Milan con altri brasiliani e il Milan è un argomento molto discusso."

Come hai vissuto le tue prime ore da milanista? Che impressioni hai avuto? Cosa pensi di poter dare in più al Milan?

"I primi giorni sono stati intensi: ho fatto molti test. Il Milan è un club che si prende cura molto dei propri giocatori. Entrare nel museo è stato un momento storico, mi sono emozionato: non mi capita spesso. Vedere tutti i trofei che il Milan ha conquistato... È davvero un sogno. Tutti i brasiliani sognano di venire qui: per me è un onore incredibile. È un momento davvero grande e importante: non vedo l'ora di indossare la maglia."

Puoi giocare anche come difensore centrale?

"Sono sempre stato in grado di aiutare le squadre, in qualsiasi modo. Nella scorsa stagione ho giocato fuori dalla mia posizione abituale: ho fatto sia il terzino che il centrale. Sono qui per dare il mio contributo, e se l'allenatore lo desidera, sono disposto a fare qualsiasi cosa. Nella mia posizione naturale, do il massimo."

Riguardo al numero 22, hai parlato con Kakà?

"Sì, la maglia numero 22 ha una storia speciale con il Milan ed è stata indossata da Kakà: in nazionale avevo lo stesso numero. Nelle mie migliori stagioni ho portato questo numero. Tutti sanno che il passato del numero 22 del Milan è molto luminoso: non ho ancora parlato con lui, ma avere questa eredità è una delle cose più belle della mia vita."

Cosa ti ha detto Kulusevski?

"Mi ha parlato molto bene di Ibra. Giochiamo entrambi a destra e abbiamo una visione del calcio simile. Gli piace molto l'Italia e mi ha detto che starò bene qui con la mia famiglia."

Come hai trascorso l'estate?

"Gli ultimi mesi sono stati intensi. Ho viaggiato con il Tottenham e ogni giorno chiamavo il mio agente con grande desiderio di venire qui. È stato piuttosto complesso, un mix di apprensione e desiderio. Sono molto felice di essere qui, anche se in alcuni momenti ho avuto paura: il tempo passava e non c'era una soluzione definitiva."

A quale aspetto della Serie A pensi di doverti abituare?

"Il campionato italiano è un po' diverso da quelli in cui ho giocato. Penso che la Serie A sia più statica, ma tatticamente mi sono sempre trovato bene e non credo che avrò problemi. Tuttavia, ho voglia di imparare e fare le cose per bene: tutto quello che mi verrà detto lo apprenderò e seguirò tutte le istruzioni necessarie."

Hai visto Chukwueze e Pulisic, come sarà giocare con loro?

"Ho guardato le partite del Milan. Penso che nel complesso il Milan abbia una squadra incredibile con grandi giocatori e un ottimo calcio. Per me sarà un piacere condividere il campo con tutti questi giocatori. Non ci saranno problemi con compagni di altri ruoli. Ho parlato con Leao e Morata: mi aiuteranno. Voglio fare amicizia con tutti i giocatori."

Ti senti più difensore o attaccante?

"Ho entrambe le qualità, ho fatto entrambe le cose: ho difeso e attaccato con successo. Dipende dalla formazione della squadra e dal sistema. Se devo attaccare per 90 minuti, lo farò per 90 minuti. Come ha detto Ibra, bisogna trovare il giusto equilibrio."

Have you always believed in Milan?

"Yes, I've had many conversations with the club and its representatives. It was always clear that Milan was the best choice for me: I carry it in my heart. I can be both a forward and a defender; I'm highly motivated. Milan has always believed in me. Even though I'm young, I've always taken on a leadership role in every team I've been on: it's part of my character. I talk a lot with my teammates, even during training. I'd like to thank Zlatan and Milan for this opportunity and for the effort they put into bringing me here. I want to give my best."

Do you look up to any of the great defenders in Milan's history? Have you spoken with Fonseca?

"I haven't yet spoken directly with the coach. Milan has had great players like Thiago Silva and Cafu... I think all the Brazilians who have been here have left an important mark on the club's history. Milan has acquired an Emerson who is in a very mature phase: the time I spent in my previous teams taught me a lot. I'm coming here with great motivation. You can count on a warrior."

What is your relationship with Ibra like?

"Zlatan is a player who makes a difference on a global scale, everyone knows that. I used to watch him on TV, and he’s had an incredible career: he has always shown a strong desire to win. It was a great honor to know that someone like Ibra was keeping an eye on me. I want to repay this commitment, and I’ll do it on the pitch."

Do you have any idea how Fonseca might use you tactically? Have you spoken with other Brazilians at Milan?

"I think the coach knows my qualities well: I've shown that I can attack and defend with great intensity, just as he likes. I'm here to play football. Yes, I've talked about Milan with other Brazilians, and Milan is a very popular topic."

How did you experience your first hours as a Milan player? What impressions did you have? What do you think you can bring to Milan?

"The first days were intense: I underwent many tests. Milan is a club that takes great care of its players. Entering the museum was a historic moment, I got emotional: it doesn’t happen often. Seeing all the trophies Milan has won... It’s truly a dream. All Brazilians dream of coming here: for me, it's an incredible honor. It’s a really big and important moment: I can’t wait to put on the jersey."

Can you also play as a center-back?

"I've always been able to help my teams in any way possible. Last season, I played outside of my usual position: I played both full-back and center-back. I'm here to contribute, and if the coach wants, I'm willing to do anything. In my natural position, I give my best."

Regarding the number 22, have you talked to Kakà?

"Yes, the number 22 jersey has a special history with Milan and was worn by Kakà: I wore this number for the national team. In my best seasons, I had this number. Everyone knows that the history of Milan’s number 22 is very bright: I haven't spoken to him yet, but having this legacy is one of the most beautiful things in my life."

What did Kulusevski tell you?

*"He spoke very highly of Ibra. We both play on the right, and we share a similar vision of football. He really likes Italy, and he said that I’ll be happy here with my family."*

How did you spend the summer?

"The last few months have been intense. I traveled with Tottenham, and every day I called my agent, eager to come here. It was quite complex, a mix of apprehension and desire. I’m very happy to be here, although at times I was afraid: time was passing, and there wasn't a final solution."

What aspect of Serie A do you think you'll need to adapt to?

"Italian football is a bit different from the leagues I've played in. I think Serie A is more static, but tactically, I've always felt comfortable and don't think I'll have any problems. However, I'm eager to learn and do things well: everything I'm told, I'll learn and follow all the necessary instructions."

Have you seen Chukwueze and Pulisic play? How do you think it will be to play with them?

"I've watched Milan’s games. I think overall, Milan has an incredible team with great players and plays excellent football. For me, it will be a pleasure to share the pitch with all these players. There will be no issues with players in other roles. I’ve talked to Leao and Morata: they’ll help me. I want to make friends with all the players."

Do you see yourself more as a defender or a forward?

"I have both qualities; I've done both: I've defended and attacked successfully. It depends on the team’s formation and system. If I have to attack for 90 minutes, I’ll do it for 90 minutes. As Ibra said, you have to find the right balance."
