In questa stagione così atipica e travagliata del Milan, segnata da numerosi momenti negativi, pochi sprazzi positivi e parecchie situazioni difficili da interpretare, sembra che il Mondo rossonero si sia quasi dimenticato di un giocatore che, arrivato in Italia ormai due anni fa, ha ampiamente deluso le aspettative. Si parla di Samuel Chukwueze, esterno destro nigeriano classe 1999. Quest’anno ha collezionato 33 presenze complessive, ma solo 12 da titolare, con 5 reti e un solo assist.

L’ex Villarreal, dopo una prima annata molto deludente, sembrava in estate destinato a essere uno degli elementi su cui Fonseca avrebbe potuto puntare per un rilancio: l’ex tecnico del Lille lo ha utilizzato parecchio in preparazione estiva e l’esterno aveva dato segnali incoraggianti. Tuttavia, lì si è fermato tutto: Chukwueze è rapidamente diventato evanescente e, tra problemi fisici e prestazioni anonime, ha finito per accomodarsi in panchina. Con Conceiçao, salvo un exploit isolato a San Siro contro il Parma, la situazione è persino peggiorata: da quando l’ex allenatore del Porto è arrivato, Chukwueze ha giocato appena 111 minuti in Serie A. Davvero troppo poco per un calciatore costato 20 milioni di euro (più bonus), con un ingaggio netto di 4 milioni, e arrivato a Milano con ben altre aspettative.

Ma dov’è il problema? Prima di tutto nel fatto che in Italia il calcio è profondamente diverso rispetto a quello spagnolo: nella Liga l’esterno trovava spazi che in Serie A non ci sono, e che qui devono essere creati con intelligenza e imprevedibilità. Ed è qui che si arriva al nodo principale: il numero 21 è un giocatore prevedibile, limitato a un solo piede e a un solo tipo di giocata, facilmente leggibile in ogni situazione. O meglio, lo è quando gli si chiede di non partecipare al gioco tra le linee centrali, “relegandolo” a tentare di superare l’uomo sulla fascia in situazioni di uno contro uno o più difensori. Samu fatica terribilmente negli spazi ampi, mentre sul breve è leggermente più efficace. Ma, al di là delle incomprensioni tattiche, il contributo del nigeriano è stato oggettivamente insufficiente, con o senza attenuanti. Una situazione che ora, con l’imminente apertura del mercato, impone delle riflessioni.

A fine stagione Chukwueze avrà un valore residuo a bilancio di poco meno di 13 milioni di euro: è questa la cifra minima che il Milan dovrà incassare per evitare una minusvalenza. Sembra inevitabile – anche perché è difficile immaginare che l’ex Villarreal accetti di continuare a fare la comparsa – che le strade si separino. Due anni bastano per valutare un giocatore, soprattutto quando non è più così giovane. E appare chiaro che Chukwueze al Milan sia stato una grossa delusione.

In this strange and troubled season for Milan, marked by many low points, few highs, and several almost incomprehensible situations, it seems the Rossoneri world has somewhat forgotten a player who, having arrived in Italy two years ago, has clearly fallen short of expectations. We’re talking about Samuel Chukwueze, the Nigerian right winger born in 1999. This year, he’s made 33 appearances across all competitions, but only 12 as a starter, scoring 5 goals and providing just one assist.

The former Villarreal player, after a very disappointing first season, seemed in the summer to be one of the players Fonseca might be able to revive: the former Lille coach used him frequently during preseason, and the winger responded positively. But things didn’t progress: Chukwueze quickly faded, and between injuries and anonymous performances, he found himself back on the bench. Under Conceiçao, apart from a random breakthrough at San Siro against Parma, things got even worse: since the former Porto coach took over, Chukwueze has played only 111 minutes in Serie A. Far too little for a player who cost 20 million euros (plus bonuses), earns 4 million net per year, and arrived in Milan with completely different expectations.

But what’s wrong? First, the fact that the style of play in Italy is entirely different from Spain: in La Liga, the winger could find spaces that simply don’t exist in Serie A, where they must be created with intelligence and unpredictability. And here lies the main issue: number 21 is predictable, one-footed, and limited to a single type of move, easily read in every situation. Or at least, he becomes so when asked not to contribute in the central buildup, “relegating him” to beating his man on the flank in one-on-one or one-on-multiple situations. Samu struggles badly in open space, while he’s slightly more effective in tight areas. But beyond tactical misunderstandings, the Nigerian’s contribution has been objectively insufficient, with or without excuses. A situation that now, as the transfer market approaches, calls for reflection.

At the end of the season, Chukwueze will have a residual book value of just under 13 million euros: this is the minimum amount Milan will need to avoid a loss. It seems inevitable — also because it’s hard to imagine the former Villarreal man willing to continue as a mere backup — that the paths will part. Two years are enough to judge a player, especially when he’s no longer that young. And it’s clear that Chukwueze has been a bitter disappointment for Milan.
