DALLO SCUDETTO AL DECLINO: LE TAPPE DELLA CADUTA ROSSONERA

Quando le cose precipitano in questo modo, è giusto che le colpe vengano suddivise tra proprietà, dirigenti, allenatore e giocatori.

L’anno scorso ci siamo lamentati (giustamente) di un Milan al secondo posto, mai realmente in lotta per lo Scudetto. Quest’anno, invece, il Milan è stato ottavo in classifica per gran parte del campionato, mostrando enormi difficoltà nel vincere più di un paio di partite consecutive.

Nonostante la vittoria al Bernabéu, una Supercoppa conquistata in rimonta contro le rivali storiche, il tentativo di cambiare l’inerzia della stagione con un nuovo tecnico e un mercato importante (considerando che fosse quello di gennaio), il Milan non è mai riuscito davvero a raddrizzare una stagione nata male e che sta finendo peggio.

I problemi del Milan, però, sono più profondi e vanno ricercati alla radice. Per farlo, bisogna tornare indietro di quasi tre anni analizzando bene la situazione.

Dopo lo Scudetto vinto il Milan ha da subito mostrato carenze strutturali e di mentalità. Non a caso, nonostante un ottimo cammino in Champions (seppur con un euroderby perso malamente in semifinale), il diavolo Campione d’Italia si è classificato quinto sul campo, accedendo all’Europa che conta solo grazie alla penalizzazione della Juventus.

L’approccio "morbido" ai match e i gol subiti nei primi 5-10 minuti di gioco partono proprio da lì, dalla stagione 2022/2023. Ecco alcuni esempi significativi:

• Milan-Udinese 3-2 – Becão segna dopo 2 minuti.

• Supercoppa Italiana – Milan sotto 0-2 dopo 21 minuti.

• Lazio-Milan 4-0 – Milinković-Savić segna dopo 4 minuti.

• Milan-Sassuolo 2-5 – Sassuolo avanti 0-3 dopo 30 minuti.

• Bologna-Milan 1-1 – Sansone segna dopo 1 minuto.

• Udinese-Milan 3-1 – Pereyra segna dopo 9 minuti.

• Lecce-Milan 2-2 – Autogol di Theo dopo 3 minuti.

• Euroderby (semifinale di andata) – Milan sotto 0-2 dopo 11 minuti.

A ciò si aggiungono il doppio pareggio contro la Cremonese, le famose dichiarazioni di Tonali sui problemi di mentalità, e la sconfitta per 2-0 a La Spezia con la squadra redarguita dalla Curva a fine partita.

Fatta questa premessa, ovvero di carenze e difficoltà emerse già dall'anno successivo allo Scudetto, è poi un dato di fatto che la situazione ambientale sia letteralmente precipitata da quando l’attuale dirigenza ha preso il controllo del Milan. Controllo preso con la presunzione di poter gestire tutto in autonomia senza farsi affiancare da figure con esperienza, utili a dare punti di riferimento all’interno di un club di livello mondiale.

Figure che già solo nell’anno dello scudetto, con limitatissime risorse economiche, erano riuscite a costruire una macchina quasi perfetta con un organigramma ben definito e con tutte le pedine al posto giusto.

Maldini e Massara, nonostante gli eccellenti risultati ottenuti, sono però stati liquidati dopo una colazione a causa di un rapporto mai realmente sbocciato con il nuovo proprietario Gerry Cardinale. Pochi giorni dopo è poi toccato a Sandro Tonali, anima e cuore di quel Milan, venduto al Newcastle in sole 48 ore. Della rosa che nel 2022 ha vinto lo Scudetto, oggi solo quattro vestono ancora la maglia rossonera.

Col senno di poi gli unici errori riconducibili alla precedente gestione sportiva sono stati qualche valutazione errata nei rinnovi e un mercato post-Scudetto non perfetto. Tuttavia, va comunque sottolineato come quel mercato abbia portato Thiaw (tuttora titolare) e De Ketelaere, che venduto in fretta e furia sta facendo da due anni le fortune dell’Atalanta. Un mercato portato avanti in un clima di grande incertezza, nel bel mezzo di un cambio di proprietà e con risorse economiche ridicole vista anche la vittoria dello Scudetto.

Errori che comunque non avrebbero mai dovuto portare all’allontanamento della vecchia dirigenza, e che sono invece stati utilizzati come pretesto per interrompere un rapporto oramai arrivato ai minimi storici.

Venendo all’attualità, è innegabile come negli ultimi due anni questa dirigenza abbia compiuto errori ben più gravi. I più evidenti:

1. Confermare Pioli, legittimandolo con addirittura più poteri decisionali, nonostante fosse un allenatore ampiamente a fine ciclo da oltre un anno.

2. Spendere cifre importanti su giocatori mediocri e poco funzionali al modulo della squadra.

3. Sbagliare la scelta dell’allenatore (con l’aggravante Antonio Conte libero) scaricandolo in malo modo dopo sole 15 partite dopo avergli attribuito la maggior parte delle colpe.

4. Adottare una (non) comunicazione con l’esterno. Una (non) comunicazione fatta di silenzi e con poche interviste solo esclusivamente programmate. Emblema di questi lunghi silenzi proprio l’assenza del proprietario in occasione dei 125 anni del Club.

5. Il progetto “Milan Futuro”, che sulla carta doveva essere una grande iniziativa, affidato a persone totalmente inesperte e gestito nel peggior modo possibile.

Passando al campo, a oggi sicuramente il primo problema è la totale mancanza di disciplina tattica. In nessun Campionato europeo ci si può permettere di giocare con quattro attaccanti contemporaneamente, se non in momenti specifici della partita. Serve un allenatore di prima fascia, con idee chiare e un suo stile di gioco ben definito. Un allenatore che abbia ben chiaro un modulo e i giocatori necessari per interpretarlo al meglio. Un allenatore che al Milan manca oramai da troppo tempo.

Quanto ai giocatori, certi atteggiamenti molli, superficiali e inconsistenti non sono più accettabili. È impossibile pensare di commettere un errore tecnico individuale a partita come invece sta accadendo da quasi un mese a questa parte.

L'altro problema è sicuramente la carenza di leadership: i giocatori più esperti, da anni nel Milan e protagonisti anche con le loro nazionali, continuano a non convincere nè a livello di performance nè a livello di tenuta mentale.

Alcuni riconducono lo scarso rendimento dei vari Theo, Maignan, Tomori e Leão all’addio di Maldini. Una situazione che comunque non può essere accettabile. Piaccia o meno, Paolo Maldini appartiene al passato di questa società. I giocatori firmano con i club, non con i dirigenti.

Chi per suoi legittimi motivi non è più felice al Milan, può tranquillamente salutare e andare via. L’attuale situazione di depressione sportiva non giova a nessuno.

Ultimo, ma non meno importante, il proprietario Gerry Cardinale. Tralasciando la questione stadio, che meriterebbe un discorso a parte, RedBird ha letteralmente distrutto sia dal punto di vista sportivo sia dal punto di vista ambientale una squadra presa con lo Scudetto sul petto e arrivata fino in semifinale di Champions League.

In soli due anni l’attuale gestione ha trascinato il Milan in un baratro senza fondo. Con ogni probabilità, dopo quattro qualificazioni consecutive in Champions, il Milan il prossimo anno guarderà la competizione dal divano di casa.

La colpa più grande e più triste però è senza dubbio quella di aver distrutto il meraviglioso clima che c’era a San Siro e che si respirava fino a poco tempo fa.

Vi ricordate Milan-Fiorentina e Milan-Atalanta nel maggio 2022? Quelle due partite chiave per lo Scudetto furono vinte anche grazie ai tifosi, con 80.000 persone a spingere la squadra verso un unico obiettivo.

Oggi, invece, i tifosi sono divisi e smarriti, proprio come la squadra in campo.

Chiunque arrivi al Milan in questo momento sembra essere risucchiato da questa negatività. Conceição, che sicuramente ha grandi colpe, sembra essere al Milan da due anni anziché da due mesi. Pensiamo anche a Morata, arrivato con entusiasmo e mandato via dopo cinque mesi. La speranza è che i vari Félix e Giménez, ma anche i futuri acquisti, non facciano la stessa fine.

Sperando possa ancora esserci qualche soddisfazione sportiva in questa stagione, l’augurio è che si inizi già ora a lavorare seriamente e con competenza per la prossima. Sia per il bene dei tifosi, sia soprattutto per il bene del Milan.

When things spiral out of control like this, it’s fair that the blame is shared among the owners, management, coach, and players.

Last year, we rightly complained about a Milan in second place, never really in the running for the Scudetto. This year, however, Milan has been in eighth place for most of the season, struggling to win more than a couple of consecutive matches.

Despite the victory at the Bernabéu, a Super Cup won in comeback fashion against historical rivals, the attempt to turn the season around with a new coach and an important transfer window (considering it was the January one), Milan has never really been able to fix a season that started badly and is ending worse.

Milan’s problems, however, run deeper and need to be traced back to the root cause. To do this, we must go back almost three years and carefully analyze the situation.

After winning the Scudetto, Milan immediately showed structural and mentality flaws. Not by chance, despite an excellent run in the Champions League (even though they lost the Euroderby badly in the semifinals), the reigning Italian champions finished fifth in the league, qualifying for Europe only thanks to Juventus’ points deduction.

The vague approach and goals conceded in the first 5-10 minutes of play stem from this, from the 2022/2023 season. Here are some significant examples:

• Milan-Udinese 3-2 – Becão scores after 2 minutes.

• Supercoppa Italiana – Milan down 0-2 after 21 minutes.

• Lazio-Milan 4-0 – Milinković-Savić scores after 4 minutes.

• Milan-Sassuolo 2-5 – Sassuolo leading 0-3 after 30 minutes.

• Bologna-Milan 1-1 – Sansone scores after 1 minute.

• Udinese-Milan 3-1 – Pereyra scores after 9 minutes.

• Lecce-Milan 2-2 – Theo’s own goal after 3 minutes.

• Euroderby (first leg of the semifinal) – Milan down 0-2 after 11 minutes.

In addition to this, there were the two draws against Cremonese, Tonali’s famous comments on mentality issues, and the 2-0 defeat to Spezia, with the team being reprimanded by the Curva after the match.

That being said, it is a fact that the environment has completely collapsed since the current management took control of Milan. Control was taken with the presumption of being able to manage everything alone, without any experienced or reference figures within a world-class club.

Figures that, even in the Scudetto-winning year, with very limited financial resources, managed to build almost a perfect machine, with a well-defined structure and all the right pieces in place.

Maldini and Massara, despite the excellent results, were dismissed after a breakfast meeting due to a relationship that never really blossomed with the new owner, Gerry Cardinale. A few days later, Sandro Tonali, the soul and heart of that Milan, was sold to Newcastle in just 48 hours. Of the squad that won the Scudetto in 2022, only four players remain today.

With hindsight, the only errors of the previous management were some wrong evaluations in contract renewals and an imperfect post-Scudetto market. However, it should still be noted that this market brought in Thiaw (still a starter) and De Ketelaere, who has been helping Atalanta for two years now. This market was carried out during a change of ownership, with ridiculous financial resources despite the Scudetto win.

Mistakes that should never have led to the departure of the old management, which was instead used as an excuse to end a relationship that had already hit rock bottom.

Turning to the present, it’s undeniable that in the last two years this management has made far more serious mistakes. The most evident ones:

1. Confirming Pioli, legitimizing him with even more decision-making power, despite being a coach who had been at the end of his cycle for over a year.

2. Spending significant amounts on mediocre players who are poorly suited to the team’s system.

3. Making the wrong coach choice (with the added problem that Antonio Conte was available) and dismissing him poorly, blaming him for most of the issues after just 15 matches.

4. Adopting a (non) communication approach with the outside world. A (non) communication consisting of silences and very few interviews, only those that were strictly scheduled. The emblem of these long silences was the absence of the owner at the club’s 125th anniversary celebration.

5. The “Milan Future” project, which on paper should have been a major initiative, entrusted to completely inexperienced people and managed in the worst possible way.

On the pitch, the main issue today is the total lack of tactical discipline. No European league can afford to play with four forwards simultaneously, except in specific moments of the match. A top-tier coach is needed, someone with clear ideas and a well-defined playing style. A figure that Milan has lacked for too long.

As for the players, certain soft, superficial, and inconsistent attitudes are no longer acceptable. It is impossible to think that individual technical mistakes can happen every game.

Another problem is the lack of leadership: the most experienced players, those who have been with Milan for years and are also protagonists with their national teams, continue to disappoint both in performance and mental resilience.

Some attribute the poor form of Theo, Maignan, Tomori, and Leão to Maldini’s departure. However, this situation is still unacceptable. Like it or not, Paolo Maldini is part of the past of this club. Players sign with the clubs, not with the managers.

Anyone who is no longer happy at Milan for legitimate reasons can simply say goodbye and leave. The current state of sports depression benefits no one.

Last but not least, owner Gerry Cardinale. Setting aside the stadium issue, which deserves its own discussion, RedBird has literally destroyed both the sporting and environmental aspects of a team that, with the Scudetto on its chest, reached the Champions League semifinals.

In just two years, the current management has dragged Milan into a bottomless pit. With any luck, after four consecutive Champions League qualifications, Milan will watch the competition from their couch next year.

The greatest and saddest fault, however, is undoubtedly the destruction of the wonderful atmosphere at San Siro that existed not long ago.

Do you remember Milan-Fiorentina and Milan-Atalanta in May 2022? Those two key matches for the Scudetto were won thanks to the fans, with 80,000 people pushing the team toward a single goal.

Today, however, the fans are divided and lost, just like the team on the pitch.

Anyone who arrives at Milan right now seems to be swallowed up by this negativity. Conceição, who certainly bears significant responsibility, feels like he’s been at Milan for two years instead of two months. Let’s also think about Morata, who came with enthusiasm and was sent away after five months. The hope is that players like Félix and Giménez, and even future signings, don’t suffer the same fate.

Hoping that there will still be some sporting satisfaction this season, the wish is that serious and competent work begins now for the next season. For the good of the fans, and above all, for the good of Milan.
