Sergio Conceiçao ha parlato a Mediaset al termine del trionfo rossonero per 3-2 ai danni dell'Inter, valso l'ottava Supercoppa Italiana:

Vittorie contro Juve ed Inter in pochi giorni, come ha fatto?

“Sono molto contento per i giocatori, non era facile. L’ambiente non era al meglio. Noi avevamo pochi giorni per lavorare su dettagli e piccole cose che erano importanti per me in queste due sfide. Affrontavamo due squadre di grandissimo livello. Il merito è dei giocatori che hanno assorbito tutto quello che abbiamo dato. Ci sono stati errori perché l’avversario ha qualità, ci sono cose da migliorare, c’è tanto lavoro da fare. Loro sono coscienti di questo, possiamo fare un grande lavoro in questi 4 mesi per arrivare nei primi posti, dove deve stare il Milan, non al settimo posto come ora. Adesso abbiamo festeggiato, da domani si pensa al Cagliari”.

Ancora una volta l'hai ribaltata dopo l'intervallo, cosa ha detto alla squadra?

“Alla fine c’erano due-tre cose a livello difensivo, era la fase offensiva che bisognava laterale. È stata una botta grande prendere i due gol. Nel secondo tempo una non buona lettura della profondità ci ha messo sotto 2-0. Ma questo vuol dire che la squadra ha carattere, è riuscita a vincere due partite contro grandi squadre. All’intervallo un allenatore deve gestire e cambiare cose, fa parte del mio lavoro e per questo mi pagano”.

Oggi la squadra ha pressato bene, la difesa ha fatto quel passo in avanti quando avanzava il centrocampo:

“Esatto. Bravo, se vogliamo essere compatti tutti i reparti sono importanti e ci deve essere poca distanza tra loro. Io so che i difensori che abbiamo, e anche i centrocampisti, possono ancora fare meglio. Devono avere coraggio. Se vogliamo tornare ad essere il grande Milan serve questa voglia, questo coraggio. Per me è importante, e non è facile l’articolazione della linea difensiva. Ma loro sono intelligenti, capiscono quello che vogliamo nonostante il poco tempo. Poi non è facile per l’intensità, non abbiamo avuto 5-6 giorni puliti per lavorare. Complimenti a loro, hanno capito cosa dovevamo fare per vincere”.

Come sarà la gestione di Leao?

“Leao è un fenomeno. Lo conosco già da tanto tempo, portoghese da me. Lui è uno rilassato, io sono teso (sorride, ndr). Deve imparare 2-3 cosine e può essere il migliore al mondo. Ha tutto, non lo dico per essere simpatico, ha tantissima qualità e se la mette al servizio della squadra sarà ancora più forte. Secondo me a fine stagione sarà uno dei migliori del mondo, non ho dubbi”

Sergio Conceição spoke to Mediaset following Inter-Milan 2-3. It was the coach’s second match in charge of the Rossoneri and his first trophy: an Italian Super Cup that will be remembered for a long time. Here are his statements:

Victories against Juve and Inter in just a few days—how did you do it?

“I’m very happy for the players; it wasn’t easy. The atmosphere wasn’t at its best. We only had a few days to work on details and small things that were important to me in these two matches. We were up against two very high-level teams. The credit goes to the players who absorbed everything we gave them. There were mistakes because the opponents have quality, but there’s room for improvement, and there’s a lot of work to do. They are aware of this. We can do great work over the next four months to climb to the top spots where Milan belongs—not in seventh place like now. For the moment, we’ve celebrated. Starting tomorrow, we’ll focus on Cagliari.”

Once again, you turned the game around after halftime. What did you say to the team?

“There were two or three defensive issues, but it was the offensive phase that needed more lateral movement. Conceding those two goals was a hard blow. The second goal came from a poor reading of depth early in the second half. But this shows the team has character; they managed to win two matches against great teams. At halftime, a coach has to manage and make changes—that’s part of my job, and it’s what I’m paid for.”

Today, the team pressed well, and the defense stepped forward when the midfield advanced:

“Exactly. Well observed. If we want to be compact, all departments must play a role, and there has to be little distance between them. I know our defenders—and also our midfielders—can do even better. They need courage. If we want to return to being the great Milan, we need that desire and bravery. For me, it’s crucial. It’s not easy to articulate the defensive line, but they are intelligent players who understand what we want, despite the limited time. It’s also not easy due to the intensity; we didn’t have 5-6 clean days to work. Credit to them—they understood what we needed to do to win.”

How will you manage Leão?

“Leão is a phenomenon. I’ve known him for a long time; he’s Portuguese like me. He’s a relaxed guy, while I’m more tense (smiles). He just needs to learn two or three little things, and he can be the best in the world. He has it all, and I’m not saying this to be nice. He has incredible quality, and if he puts it at the service of the team, he’ll become even stronger. By the end of the season, I believe he’ll be one of the best in the world—no doubt about it.”
