C’è distanza tra Milan e Inter oggi?

“Dal punto di vista tecnico non siamo così lontani. Ma a livello societario e nella costruzione della squadra, sì: c’è molta distanza. L’Inter ha un’identità chiara. Noi no. Al Milan servirebbero 3-4 innesti importanti.”

Com’è stata la tua esperienza da dirigente al Milan?

“Amo profondamente questo club. Non sono nato milanista, ma lo sono diventato. Mi ha chiamato Paolo (Maldini) nell’estate del 2019. Appena arrivato, ho pensato che la squadra andasse cambiata completamente.

Dopo il mercato dissi che i giovani non possono crescere da soli: servivano figure forti. A gennaio arrivarono Kjaer e Ibrahimovic. E Zlatan fu poi decisivo per lo Scudetto.”

Quando ti sei accorto che qualcosa non andava?

“Subito. Già quando Paolo mi propose il ruolo. Gli dissi: ‘Quindi mi stai chiedendo di lottare contro la proprietà per il bene del Milan?’. E lui: ‘Più o meno, ma provaci comunque’.

Rifarei tutto. Non mi pento. Già da agosto mi avevano tolto il potere di firma, senza dirmelo.

L’intervista che ha fatto Maldini a Repubblica è vera al 100%. C’è tutto lì dentro.”

Nel 2020 hai parlato di de-milanizzazione e de-italianizzazione. Che intendevi?

“L’intervista l’ho scritta io. Avevo paura che si volesse cancellare il senso di appartenenza. Troppa emozione per chi vuole solo controllo.

I tifosi diventano clienti. I giocatori diventano asset. E così si appiattisce tutto.”

C’è chi ha attribuito a Moncada il merito di molti acquisti, per sminuire il vostro lavoro. È vero?

“Moncada è un ottimo scout. Ma tutti nei club sanno chi sono i giocatori forti, tipo Leao. Li conoscevano tutti.

Noi sceglievamo i giocatori. Lui magari li proponeva, ma poi non trattava mai. Si teneva al suo ruolo, con eleganza.”

Qualche acquisto che avevate chiuso e vi è stato impedito?

“Gennaio 2020: avevo chiuso Dani Olmo e Szoboszlai. Avevamo venduto Piatek e Suso per quasi 50 milioni.

Olmo era fatto per 18+2 milioni. Szoboszlai aveva una clausola da 20 milioni, già accordato.

Quando ho capito che non li avremmo presi, nonostante gli accordi, mi sono detto: ‘Ma cosa ci sto a fare qui?’”

Cosa pensi dell’allontanamento di Maldini?

“Una pagina vergognosa. Il modo in cui è stato fatto è indecente.

Maldini era l’ultimo ostacolo per chi comanda oggi.

Credo che c’entri anche la cessione di Tonali. Sapevano che Paolo non l’avrebbe mai lasciato andare.”

Su Tonali?

“L’avevamo contattato un anno prima. Grande milanista, aveva detto no a Juve e Inter per venire da noi.

Il primo anno era bloccato dall’emozione e dal rispetto per lo stadio.

Paolo e Ricky (Massara) hanno fatto bene a crederci e tenerlo.

Non si può lasciar andare via un simbolo così.”

Is there a gap between Milan and Inter today?

“Technically, we’re not that far apart. But in terms of management and building a functioning team, yes – we’re very far behind. Inter has a clear identity. We don’t. Milan needs three or four key signings.”

What was your experience like as a Milan director?

“I deeply love this club. I wasn’t born a Milan fan, but I became one. Paolo (Maldini) called me in the summer of 2019.

When I arrived, I thought the whole team needed to be changed.

After the transfer window, I said kids can’t grow up alone – you need strong, experienced figures. In January, Kjaer and Ibrahimovic arrived. Zlatan ended up being crucial for the Scudetto.”

When did you realize something wasn’t right?

“Right away. Even when Paolo first offered me the role. I told him, ‘So you’re asking me to fight against our ownership for the good of Milan?’ And he said, ‘More or less, but try anyway.’

I’d do it all again. No regrets. They had already taken away my signing authority in August without telling me.

Paolo Maldini’s interview with Repubblica is 100% true. Everything is in there.”

In 2020, you talked about ‘de-Milanization’ and ‘de-Italianization’. What did you mean?

“I wrote that interview myself. My fear was exactly that – removing the sense of belonging. That feeling is too strong for those who want full control.

Fans become customers. Players become assets. That flattens everything.”

Some at the club credited Moncada with many transfers, to downplay your and Paolo’s work. Is that true?

“Moncada is a great scout. But at top clubs, scouts know most of the players anyway – like Leao, everyone knew him.

We made the decisions on players. He might have introduced them, but never handled negotiations. He stayed in his lane – respectfully, I must say.”

Were there players you wanted and couldn’t sign?

“Yes. In January 2020, I had closed deals for Dani Olmo and Szoboszlai.

We had just sold Piatek and Suso for nearly €50 million.

Olmo was €18+2m. Szoboszlai had a €20m clause, already agreed.

When I realized we weren’t going to sign them, despite the deals being in place, I thought: ‘What am I even doing here?’”

What do you think about Maldini’s departure from Milan?

“It was shameful. The way it happened was unacceptable.

Maldini was the last obstacle for the people in charge now.

I think it’s closely tied to the Tonali sale. They knew Paolo would never let him go.”

And about Tonali?

“We contacted him a year earlier. A real Milan fan. He turned down both Juve and Inter to join us.

His first year, he was stiff – overwhelmed by love for Milan and the San Siro.

Paolo and Ricky (Massara) did well to believe in him and keep him.

You can’t let a symbol like that go.”
